Dyslexia Intervention
I am a qualified teacher with over 15 years of experience and specialist training in the Playberry Tier 3 Multisensory Literacy Program
The Playberry Literacy Program is an intensive intervention for students with reading and spelling difficulties. Playberry takes a student right back to the beginning and systematically rebuilds their knowledge of phonics (our letter-sound system) to fill in any gaps.
Sessions: 60 minutes weekly
Location: my home in Valley View, SA or can be in your own home with negotiation.
Pricing: This program is offered individually ($100/session) and in pairs ($80/session).
What to expect in a session:
The first session will involve me getting to know your child and possibly completing some assessments so that I am able to track progress. Your child will receive a folder that they will need to bring each session which will contain the work they complete with me, any homework they need to complete and their practise cards.
Sessions follow a similar structure each week to make students feel comfortable and reduce anxiety. Activities are fun and engaging and are based at the level the child is working at
Alphabet knowledge and phonological awareness activities
With the use of wooden alphabet letters students strengthen connection of letter names, alphabet order and develop working memory along with many other skills and concepts.
Reading cards and Spelling cards
Each time a new teaching point is covered the student makes their own card and clue word and picture to help them remember the rule that has been taught. This supports their memory as it is a clue they have chosen. These are revised each week during sessions and practised each day for 5-10 minutes. Practise makes permanent connections in the brain.
Revision
Revision is one of the most important aspects of the program as children need to be taught things more than once or they will forget. Children need a chance to practise and have skills reinforced in different ways that suit them. If a child is needing extra practise with a skill we may even skip learning a new teaching point that lesson and just focus on the skill they need to work on.
New teaching point
When the child is ready to move ahead a new teaching point will be taught. The new teaching point is learned in a way that involves the child such as guessing a new sound by looking at pictures. If they are learning a new sound it will be explored in a multisensory way such as by writing the sound, saying the sound and creating a new card with a clue and picture to be added to their card deck.
Game
The session ends with a game that provides more opportunities for students to practise the skills they have learned so far. The students absolutely love this part, especially when they win!
Sessions are tailored to each student’s needs and the best way that they learn. Sessions are offered in groups of two as it can benefit kids to see that there are others taking part in intervention also, a little healthy competition goes a long way.
Homework
Any homework given will be very achievable as it will only focus on sounds and concepts learned in our sessions. The homework helps students to practise and consolidate the skills and knowledge learned in sessions and will not take a lot of time.
Each week a new homework sheet will be placed in their folder. They will also have cards to practise each night, which should only take up to 10 minutes. The students who get the most benefit out of the program regularly practise their cards and complete their homework sheets.
